What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea?
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is caused by a blockage of the airway that disrupts normal breathing. The muscle tone of the body relaxes during sleep causing the soft tissue walls in the rear of the throat to narrow or collapse during sleep. Patients have episodes in which they stop breathing for several seconds, with multiple of these episodes occurring during the night. When one of these episodes occurs, a patient's body will momentarily awake itself in an effort to unblock the airway and continue breathing. This continual cycle of airway blockage and subsequent arousal leads to oxygen deprivation and a poor quality of sleep. CPAP/BIPAP therapy is designed to stop the cycle of airway blockage by keeping a patient's airway open with positive airway pressure. By using CPAP/BIPAP patients are able to improve their overall health as well as their quality of sleep.
OSA can also be caused by blockages due to deviated septum, enlarged tonsil & adenoids, obesity, extended jaw lines, narrowed esophagus, enlarged uvula, and or extended jaw lines.
